Can you read them?

The top 10 boys names are Hiroto, Ren, Yuuma, Souta, Sora, Shouta, Yamato, Haruto, Riku and Haruto (different kanji from #8).

The top 10 girls names are Yu, Aoi, Yua, Rin, Hina, Yuina, Sakura, Mana, Saki and Yuuna.

The far right column shows last year`s ranking... as you can see, not much has changed since last year, although Mana has made a big comeback from #43 last year!

What do you think of the names?

  1. Thabks for posting these! I was interested to see Nora in the top 100 list in America, it was my gran's name and I love it. I wanted to use it but not the best connotations here and really wouldn't have worked with our surname! I think Aiden is a lovely name, I had no idea it was so popular either.

  2. aaaahhh, i love baby names!

i didn't realize Aiden was that popular in the US, but it's one of only a few on the top 100 that can be "easily" done in japanese. is there a top in NZ list?

as for the japanese list, i'm not a huge fan of most of those girls' names. they just seem so "princess-y" to me. haha! i like りん and まな but names with らりるれろ in them often get butchered between english and japanese. i guess it depends on the name, though. i really like Mana too, but i think it would get mispronounced in the states/by relatives and the poor kid would get called a Man all the time! >< i like れん for a boy, but again, that pesky R...sigh. i like Yuma (yuuma?) which seems pretty "safe" to me!

as for names not on the list, i like Saya or Aya or Ayano, Mei (though i like it spelled Mae, but not sure how well that would go over in japan, people would no doubt call her まえ), Juno or Juna or even Junko.

i think boys names are much harder because you're bound by the ability to find kanji that aren't totally unreadable. though it seems with japanese kids names these days anything goes, kanji wise! i'm more in favor of names that are somewhat readable by someone who is seeing your name for the first time. (side note too: there was a kid in my japanese high school class named Ayu, and it was in hiragana, so i guess you could always give your son a non kanji name, but it seems very rare...?)

anyway, i like じょう but not sure what kanji (丈?) spelled Joe in english, maybe? or then again, my mom's middle name is Jo, so could be a nod to her to just spell it Jo. i like Junnosuke and while not quite japanese, the totally doable name, Simon. (not pronounced Shimon, but さいもん)

i'm sure there are a ton more, but i have to get ready for work...oops!

what are your favorites?? aside from Aiden, of course! if Aiden had been a girl, what would you have named him?

  4. Haha, also didn´t know Aiden is that popular as a name! But I like it very much and it is easily pronounced in japanese.

My kids have also names which are recently ranked in top 3 of german names ( Lukas + Mia) even though when they were born, those were still rare as names.

Since some day in future we want to have a little one together, we recently thought about names which we would like.. not easy since some very cute names are already in the family^^

For boys our absolute favourites are Yuuki and Sousuke , for girls Miyuki or Tamiko maybe, but we were not so sure about those since names for girls are always much harder to choose we think :)
